Also known as Canberra Grass or Cushion Bush, Scleranthus Lime Lava (Scleranthus biflorus) is a dense, low-growing Australian native plant prized for its vibrant, moss-like appearance. Despite its common names, it is not a true grass, but rather a compact, clumping perennial that forms soft, cushiony mounds of bright lime-green foliage, giving it a unique and eye-catching texture in the landscape.

This plant is particularly valued for its versatility and sculptural form. Its neat, rounded growth habit makes it an ideal groundcover, especially in rockeries, between stepping stones, or on embankments where it can cascade gently and fill gaps with visual softness. It’s also popular in more stylised designs, including Japanese gardens, where it can be used as a lawn alternative or contrast planting. Its compact nature also lends itself beautifully to container plantings and even bonsai arrangements, where its texture and form can be closely appreciated.

Scleranthus biflorus thrives in full sun and performs best in well-drained soils with good air circulation. It does not tolerate heavy humidity or severe frosts well, so some protection is recommended in less-than-ideal conditions. Avoid overwatering, particularly in humid climates, as it is prone to rot if drainage is poor. With the right care, Scleranthus Lime Lava offers year-round colour and form, adding a vivid pop of green and a soft, tactile element to gardens of all styles.
