Whether it's a 'riot' of colour from a mix brightening up a
corner or an individual variety clumping at the rear of a border, Aussies love
their Gladies. Regular Gladies with their tall stems of colourful flowers
brighten up a vase inside just as well as a garden bed outside.
Baby Glads
are elegant miniatures and have attractive contrast markings. They flower from
bottom to top in late spring and are tolerant to many different conditions.
Baby Glads grow very well in pots or the garden and seem to take forever to
flower. Once they do it's well worthwhile. Gladiolus Glamour Glads - Dwarf Cultivars
Glamour Glads are vigorous growers and produce an abundance of flowers per stalk. A great colour range including bold hues and fantastic bi-colours. They are shorter than traditional gladiolus, only growing to 50-70cm tall so will make an outstanding display in the garden border.
For best garden effect, plant in groups of six or more of a single colour. To enjoy blooms for many weeks plant corms at two week intervals from early spring. They are easy to grow, requiring only full sun and good drainage.
Gladiolus Hybrid Cultivars - Grandiflorus Group
These are the
common Gladiolus that come to mind and are known for their tall spikes of
flowers that open progressively from the bottom of the stem.
- Flowering season: spring (warm regions), summer (cool/temperate
regions).
- Mature plant size: Approximately 1.5m high, 15cm wide.
- Planting
density: 10-15cm apart in clumps of 5 or more.
- Multiplication speed: 12-20
weeks depending on climate.
- Preferred aspect: full sun with protection from
strong winds.
- Plant uses: tall background colour and cut flowers.
- Likes:
well drained soil hasn't grown gladioli before. Spray control for thrip
insects.
- Dislikes: fresh animal manures. Boggy ground.
