Common names: Cyclamen, Florists' Cyclamen, Neapolitan Cyclamen
Botanical name: Cyclamen persicum, Cyclamen hederifolium
Family name: Primulaceae
Origin: Eastern Mediterranean, Southern Europe
Plant type: Herbacious tuber.
Plant size: 8-10cm high.
Planting width: 15cm
Planting depth: Tubers should be planted with top at or just below soil surface. In containers top of tuber where leave emerge can be above soil surface to reduce likelihood of rot.
Positioning: Semi to full shade. Winter sun is suitable with summer shade. Shadier positions should be used in warmer climates.
Flowering: Cyclamen persicum - winter and spring, Cyclamen hederifolium - throughout autumn, early winter.
General information: Though often used as an indoor plant, Cyclamen persicum is also suitable for the garden.
Soil: Moist, fertile and well drained.
Watering: Require moist conditions but does not tolerate overwatering as it causes tubers to rot. To help avoid this, carefully water around the plant and try not to get any water on the foliage or tuber. When tubers are dormant they should be kept fairly dry but maintain moisure while they are actively growing. Avoid indoor pots from drying out and avoid heaters and direct sun.
Fertilising: Apply a complete fertiliser when growth begins and feed during flowering season to prolong the flowering time. Fertilise again after flowering.
Pruning: Remove flowers when finished and you can tidy up leaves as it becomes dormant in winter.
Dislikes: Drying out and being overwatered. Avoid disturbing tubers..
Pests: Cyclamen are generally pest resistant though mealybugs can sometimes be a problem. Cyclamen mite can cause the leaves of the plant to become distorted and twisted. Affected Cyclamen can either be thrown away, or placed in a shady spot outside and sprayed with an insecticide.
Uses: Ideal for shady areas, grown under trees, in rock gardens and containers. Very suitable for planting in masse or in drifts.
Tips: Do better if left undisturbed. If space allows allow flowers to set seed as this may result in increased numbers and enhanced floral display.
