This compact form has long lasting, star-shaped, large white blooms. Only the foliage is dwarf, the blooms are as large and as tall as full sized cultivars. Sear the stems with a flame before placing in water to make the blooms long lasting as a cut flower.

Planting and Growing Balloon Flowers

Common name: Balloon flower

Botanical name: Platycodon grandiflorus

Family: Campanulaceae

Flowering season: Summer.

Plant size: Tall - 60cm high x 20cm wide; Dwarf - 20cm high x 20cm wide.

Planting density: 20- 25cm apart.

Multiplication speed: Spreads slowly (best left undisturbed).

Preferred aspect: Sun or filtered sun (protect from hot afternoon sun).

Plant uses: Borders, mixed perennial beds, cut flowers.

Likes: Mulch protection from frosts.

Dislikes: Water logging.

Watering: Plants should be kept well watered during dry weather.

Fertilising: Well rotted animal manure, blood and bone, or a complete fertiliser should be worked through the soil before planting.

Lifting and storage: Plants can be lifted late autumn or during winter. Store in a moist peat moss if unable to replant immediately. Plants are best not divided.

Pests: Watch for snails and slugs. If thrip attack, spray with an insecticide as necessary.

Tips: Plants may require some support if exposed to strong winds. The flowers are excellent for cutting.

Preferred climate zones: Cool, Temperate, Arid, Semi-arid, Mild Tropical
