What is Sprekelia?

Sprekelia (Sprekelia formosissima) also known as Jacobean Lily or Aztec Lily is a bulbous perennial. It is part of the Amaryllidaceae family and is native to Mexico. The green lance shaped foliage appears first in Spring just before the spectacular unique flowers. The flower appears early Summer and is a large scarlet orchid like flower that is raised up on a single stem. Sprekelia is normally grown in places that have a warm climate and are grown in pots in a cold climate. They require a full sun position in the garden that has well drained moderately fertile soil. Sprekelia should be protected from heavy frost. They will multiply over the years if left undisturbed. They dislike being disturbed and may not flower a year or 2 after being replanted.

Benefits of Growing Sprekelia

Sprekelia are easy to grow and have attractive red flowers that make a great display. They look best when planted in a large group. Drought tolerant once established. Sprekelia are suitable for garden beds, borders, pots and containers. They make good cut flowers

When To Plant Sprekelia

Plant in late Winter to early Spring.

Soil Preparation

They like well drained, moderately fertile soil. Dig through well broken down animal manure, blood and bone or a complete fertiliser into the soil before planting.

How To Plant Sprekelia

Plant in full sun, 15-20cm apart with the top of bulb just above the soil surface.

Sprekelia Plant Care

Watering is only required throughout periods of insufficient rainfall. They prefer to stay dry during the dormant period.

In winter, top dress with well broken down animal manure, this will help with growth and produce larger blooms.

The bulbs like being left undisturbed. They can be left in the ground or lifted after the foliage dies back (in late Autumn to early Winter). If a large clump develops, it is time to lift and divide it. If dividing the clumps is required, lift bulbs in late Autumn or early Winter. Separate, clean and spread bulbs, allowing them to dry. Replant in late Winter to early Spring.

Remove dead foliage and flower stalks throughout the season.

They are pest resistant.
