What is Penstemon?

Penstemon (Penstemon spp.) is a group of herbaceous and woody perennials that range from dwarf ground covers to tall shrubs. They are part of the family Scrophulariaceae and are native to North America. Penstemon foliage is simple linear to lance-shaped leaves that grow in opposite pairs along the stem. Depending on the variety they usually form a tidy mound of mid green foliage.  They have a long flowering cycle and will usually flower from late Spring or early Summer until Autumn. The flowers are tubular which are held aloft on very tall spikes in a range of colours. The colours range from red, pink, crimson, purple or lavender, sometimes with white centers.
