What is Lachenalia?

Lachenalia (Lachenalia mutabilis) also known as Soldier Boys or Cowslip are a bulbous perennial. Part of the Hyacinthaceae they are native to South Africa. Strappy dark green foliage emerge first. Spring is their flowering time. Bell shaped flowers are held on spikes. The showy flowers that will change from blue through to mauve and into yellow. Lachenalia  prefers a full sun to part shade position and love warmer areas.

are adaptable and easy to grow giving a better display when they are crowded. They are suitable for both containers, clumps in the garden, along paths or as a low border displays. They combine beautifully with blue Muscari. Lachenalia are generally free from pests and diseases.

Suitable for all climates except tropical. Will tolerate temperatures down to 0°C.

Plant in Autumn

Soil Preparation

Will grow in any well-drained soil. Work through well broken down animal manure or compost before planting.

How To Plant Lachenalia

Plant in full sun to light shade, 7cm apart with a depth of 5cm below the soil surface.

Lachenalia Plant Care

Water when the new growth appears and keep the soil moist until the foliage dies off after flowering. When the bulbs are dormant keep them relatively dry.

Remove spent flowers and leaves at the end of the season.

Bulbs can be left in the ground for many years.

Generally free from pests and diseases.
