What is Anemones?

Anemones (Anemone coronaria) also known as Poppy Flower, Windflower or Wild Flower is a herbaceous perennial. They are part of Ranunculaceae or buttercup family that is native to Europe. Anemones are a mid/late Winter to late Spring flowering corm as long as you give them a bit of care such as liquid fertiliser during the flowering period. The corm produces numerous flowers that rise up on stiff stems above their light green lacy fern-like foliage. The flowers are red, pink, white or purple/blue with a dark center. The exception is white which has a green center. Anemones prefer a full sun position in the garden that has well drained soil. They are frost tolerant.

Benefits of Growing Anemones

Anemone are a very low maintenance plant and are ideal for planting in any garden. They make fantastic mass displays to create a sea of colour and are very easy to plant and grow. They make excellent cut flowers, lasting 7 to 10 days in the vase.

When To Plant Anemones

Plant in Autumn.

Soil Preparation

They need well-drained soil. Spread through a light organic or chemical fertiliser at planting time.

How To Plant Anemones

Plant in full sun, 15cm apart with the corm 4cm below the soil level. For best results soak the corm in water for about 1-2 hours before planting as this will promote early sprouting. Plant up to double the recommended depth in warm climates. The point of bulb faces down.

Anemones Plant Care

Water well after planting, then weekly until foliage appears. When growing only water to supplement rainfall as the corm can rot if it stays too wet for long periods.

Light organic or chemical fertiliser at planting time. Liquid fertilise regularly once buds start to form to prolong the flowering season.

You can leave these corms in the ground or dig them up once the foliage has died back. If you lift them, store them somewhere cool and dry over Summer and replant in Autumn. Can be treated as annual or bi-annuals and new bulbs planted every 2 to 3 years as these corms naturally degenerate over time.

Watch out for snails and slugs when buds appear.
