Australian native ground covers, clumping and climbing plants.
Kangaroo Paws
Kangaroo Paws (Anigozanthus) are stunning decorative clumping plants
with striking velvety flowers in a wide range of colours. They are evergreen
perennials noted for their unique bird attracting tubular flowers that open to
six 'claws' resembling a kangaroo paw.
The ‘Bush Gem' hybrids have been bred especially for reliable cultivation
with disease resistance and are free flowering year round provided spent flowers
are removed. They all suit gardens and make excellent cut flowers and the small
ones are well suited for pots. Kangaroo Paws prefer well-drained sandy soil
and a hot sunny open position or part sun and protection from heavy frost. Most
Anigozanthus will tolerate droughts although flowers will be prolonged with
summer watering.
Kangaroo paws are prone to snail and slug attack and special attention should
be given to removing them. Plants flower for the first time about 6 months after
planting.
