Garden Express :: Perennials :: Hellebores

Hellebores

Hellebores are popular plants for semi-shaded spots in the garden and are ideal planted in drifts in a woodland garden setting. Hellebores (sometimes spelt Helebore or Helleborous) are long lived plants in the right conditions and once established tolerate dry periods though they prefer moist conditions. They are a valuable addition to the garden as they flower in winter adding interest to the garden when there is less happening from other plants.

Hellebores are available in both single and double flower forms and breeding has resulted in a range of colours from dark purple, pinks to yellow and white. Many varieties have the distinctive spots on the petals and the pendulous flowers.

Planting and Caring for Hellebores

Common names: Hellebore, Winter Rose, Lenten Rose

Botanical name: Heleborus orientalis, Heleborus hybrids

Family name: Ranunculaceae

Flowering: Late winter and early spring - typically July to October.

Plant type: Evergreen herbaceous perennial.

Plant size: 30-40cm high x 50cm wide

Planting width: 40cm

Multiplication speed:  Slow.

Positioning: Part to full shade, tolerates frost.

General information: Very easy to grow.

Soil: Moist, well drained.

Watering: Enjoys damp ground and are best kept watered throughout dry periods if possible though they can withstand short dry periods once established.

Fertilising: A well rotted animal manure, blood and bone or complete fertiliser should be worked through the soil prior to planting. Each winter, top dress with well-decayed animal manure, this will help growth and produce larger blooms.

Plant uses: Under deciduous trees. Specimen plant.

Likes: Cold, damp shady spot with plenty of compost and mulch. Organic manure.

Dislikes: Full sun, drying out.

Pests: Snails and slugs.

Tips: Can be transplanted in early winter. Do not allow the roots to dry out during the transplanting process. Will perform best in a semi-shaded position that remains damp. Foliage can be trimmed before flowering to enable flowers to be more visible.
