STRAWBERRIES
Fragaria x ananassa
It's easy to grow your own succulent red strawberries in containers,
hanging, baskets, or garden beds. Choose from cool or warm climate varieties.
Fruiting Season -
Spring - summer.
Plant Size - 15cm
H x 25cm W.
Planting Density - 30cm apart.
Preferred Aspect - Sunny
(warmer northerly aspect gives earlier fruit). Need shelter from early
frosts and hot summer winds.
Likes - Weekly watering
in summer. Mist sprays in extreme temperatures to keep fruit cool. Control
of snails, slugs, thrip and red spider mites (controls are commercially
available).
General - Strawberries prefer a well
drained soil. Mound strawberry beds to approx. 15cm high. For best results mulch
with an organic material such as straw, or lay black plastic to prevent
weeds.
Watering - Strawberries
thrive in a friable soil. Moist, but not wet.
Pests - The pests
to watch for are aphids, thrip and red spider mites. All of these can
be controlled with commercial sprays specifically intended for this
purpose. Sprinkle snail bait around perimeter of plants.
Tips - To obtain a
third crop of fruit prune strawberry plants to 2cm above the crown once the second
crop has finished.
