PERENNIAL PHLOX
Phlox paniculata

Family: Polemoniaceae

Phlox are ideal as a backdrop to a low border. They produce mass flowers over several months and are virtually resistant to all types of disease.

Flowering Season: Summer to early Autumn.

Plant Size: 70cm H x 25cm W.

Planting Density: 30cm apart.

Multiplication speed: Rapid. 50- 60cm wide 3 yrs.

Preferred Aspect: Full sun. Protection from strong wind. Frost tolerant.

Plant Uses: Where lots of colour is needed right over summer.

Likes: Cool to warm climates, rich soil, regular deep watering.

Dislikes: Tropical climates. Mulch directly covering the crowns.

Watering - Phlox prefer a well drained soil. Keep moist all growing season.

Fertilising - Cover with a mulch of well rotted manure in early spring.

Lifting and storage - Plants can be lifted and divided during winter. If not planted immediately store temporarily in moist peat moss.

Pests & diseases- Generally trouble free. Watch for snails when new shoots appear. Black spot on leaves does not seem to be detrimental to flowering and can be easily controlled with a fungicidal spray.

Tips - Plant crown at soil level. Phlox are very effective in a massed display either in groups or along borders or driveways.
