Gloriosa Lily

Gloriosa Lily

Gloriosa superba 'Rothchildiana'

A climbing tuberous perennial that uses tendrils at the ends of its leaves to climb surrounding plants or structures. The unique flowers have waxy, swept-back petals of crimson red, with a yellow base and edged in bright yellow making the blooms look like they're on fire. The distinctive flowers develop prominent stamens and the petals extend further backwards as the flower matures. Typically 5-7 flowers per tuber.

Gloriosa spurba
'Rothschildiana' is most commonly grown variety of this stunning plant.

Note: All parts of the plant are toxic and may also cause skin irritation if handled. Gloriosa has the potential to be invasive in some areas though 'Rothchildiana' is a less vigorous variety. Best grown in a container and destroy spent flowers.

Gloriosa Growing, Planting and Care Guide

Common name: Gloriosa Lily

Alternate names: Gloriosa rothschildiana, Glory Lily, Creeping Lily, Flame Lily, Climbing Lily, Tiger Claw

Botanical name:
Gloriosa superba 'Rothschildiana'

Family name: Colchicaceae

Origin: Tropical Africa and Southern Asia

Flowering season: Late Summer and early Autumn

Plant type: Tuberous perennial climbing vine.

Plant size: 1.8-2.4m high x 50cm wide (needs a support to climb so height and width will depend on surroundings).

Planting time: Plant once warmer weather starts; generally planting in November guarantees the tuber won’t rot in the cold ground. Make sure all threat of frosts are over, but if the growing tip starts to discolour and swell before this time, the tuber needs to be planted straight away. If this is the case, plant in a large pot and place in a sheltered position.

Planting depth: The tuber should be planted horizontally in the ground with approximately 3-4cm of soil on top of it.

Planting density: 30-50cm apart.

Soil: Well prepared and well drained.

Multiplication speed: Can multiply by seed or tuber multiplication. May spread if left uncontrolled in favourable conditions.

Preferred aspect: Sunny to partly shady sheltered position. Protect from late frosts.

Plant uses: Can be grown in pots or used against a trellis or other structure suitable for climbing.

Likes: Surface mulch of leaf litter or similar.

Dislikes: Strong winds. Growing without anything to climb on as vines will be weak and unattractive.

Watering: Keep moist during growing season but allow pots to dry out in winter.

Fertilising: Responds well to regular feeding of diluted liquid fertiliser from when growth commences until flowering. After flowering give a fortnightly feed with liquid fertiliser to encourage better growth in the newly developing tubers.

Lifting and storage: Continue to care for the plant until the foliage completely dies off after which time the tubers should be lifted and stored in some dry potting mix until they are ready for planting next Spring).

When lifting, you will find that the old tuber has died and formed two new tubers in its place. The two new tubers are connected in a horse-shoe shape, with the growing tip at each end. Break the 'horse-shoe' in the centre for two new tubers. Can be left undisturbed in pots until it becomes crowded. Clumps can be divided by carefully separating tubers in late winter or early spring. Tubers should be stored in a dry, dark position until replanted in late October/early November.

Pests: Aphids can be a problem.

Tips: Care must be taken when handling tubers not to damage growing tip of tuber (the blunt end). Until planting, store the tuber in a cool, dark and dry place with plenty of air circulation (to prevent the tuber from rotting).

If planting in pots, ensure the pot is large enough to accommodate the 2 tubers which form during the growing period. As new tubers form from current growing point, position in pot to allow room for new tubers to develop. Insert a stake in the pot while planting to avoid damaging tuber by inserting stake later on. Carefully tie to the stake as the stem grows to ensure stem does not fall over as it grows. In a larger pot, 3 tall stakes can be used to form a tee-pee up which the stems can grow.

Gloriosa can be an environmental weed in some conditions so keep in check by planting in a container and removing seed heads after flowering. It has the potential to invade bushland and coastal areas in warmer climates and should not be planted near such sensitive areas. The generic Gloriosa superba is a declared weed in some parts of Australia so check local restrictions before planting.
