CRINUM

Family: Amaryllidaceae

Genus: Crinum

Species: Crinum x powellii

The Crinum is related to the Hippeastrum and Hymenocallis however Crinums are generally evergreen in most climates unless affected by frosts and have leaves in a different pattern that creates a taller plant than Hippeastrums. It has fragrant clusters of 8-10 trumpet-shaped flowers on tall stems in mid-late summer. The white form is Crinum x powellii 'Album' or 'Alba'.

Alternate names: Cape Lily

Origin: South Africa

Watering - Water once per week during dry periods.

Fertilising - Well rotted animal manure, blood and bone or a complete fertiliser should be worked through the soil prior to planting.

Lifting and storage - Can be left undisturbed for 3 years. If digging is necessary lift May-June and re-plant by November.

Pests - Bait for slugs and snails.

Tips - Plant neck of bulb slightly above soil level. Crinum Alba has evergreen foliage so plant where this can be a feature. Bulbs are best placed in a semi-permanent position as they grow very large deep roots and will be difficult to dig after several years.
