BALLOON FLOWER (Platycodon) Family: Campanulaceae

Balloon flower or 'Chinese Bell Flower' is a lovely long flowering plant for a summer border or amongst shrubs and annuals.

Flowering Season: Summer.

Plant Size: 60cm H x 20cm W.

Planting Density: 20- 25cm apart.

Multiplication speed: Spreads slowly (best left undisturbed).

Preferred Aspect: Sun or filtered sun (protect from hot afternoon sun).

Plant Uses: Borders, mixed perennial beds, cut flowers.

Likes: Mulch protection from frosts.

Dislikes: Water logging.

Watering - Plants should be kept well watered during dry weather.

Fertilising - Well rotted animal manure, blood and bone, or a complete fertiliser should be worked through the soil before planting.

Lifting and storage - Plants can be lifted late autumn or during winter. Store in a moist peat moss if unable to replant immediately. Plants are best not divided.

Pests - Watch for snails and slugs. If thrip attack, spray with an insecticide as necessary.

Tips- Plants may require some support if exposed to strong winds. The flowers are excellent for cutting.
