ASTILBEFamily: Saxisragaceae Clump forming rhizomatous perennials that enjoy moist situations such as beside ponds or damp depressions. Flower stems are made up of plumes of tiny individual flowers. Alternate Names: False Spiraea Origin: Temperate SE Asia and North America Flowering Season: Summer Plant Size: 60-90cm H x 30-90cm W Planting Density: 30 - 40cm apart. Multiplication speed: Rapid. May need containing. Preferred Aspect: Prefers to be a bog plant growing at side of pond or other damp area. In drier positions prefers partial shade but more tolerant of sun if located in damp situation. Plant Uses: Useful colour for waterside plantings, attractive cut flowers but fade quickly. Flowers dry to decorative shades of brown. Likes: Wet areas and occassional flooding. Dislikes: Chalky or clay soils that are prone to drying out. Watering: Water well. Not drought tolerant.. Fertilising: Add a top dressing of rich compost over winter to maintain vigour and richness in the plant. Lifting and storage: Can be left undisturbed for many years. If clumps become too thick divide with a sharp sterile knife. Pests: Hardy and pest resistant though can be affected by powdery mildew. Tips: Plant at soil level. Astilbe are easily grown and hardy. They will grow well in average garden conditions as long as the soil is not too dry. |
