David Austin Roses |
 |
|
| David Austin roses (also referred to as English Roses) were bred by David Austin to combine the charm and elegance with the colours and style of modern rose plants. This impeccable breeding line has created roses of distinction, exceptionally disease resistant and reliable and highly fragrant with loads of delicate double blooms, some with over 100 petals per flower in delightful old rose style flower forms. The fragrant roses are renowned for the strength and complexity of their fragrances. Fragrances include myrrh, musky, fruity, tea rose as well as the classic old rose scent. All this on the modern compact bush of 1.5 - 2 m x 1 m wide, making these roses a very fashionable choice for your garden. The English Roses are designed to be used in mixed borders, where their glorious shrubby forms add great impact. These bushy plants have a graceful, shapely habit which makes them incredibly versatile in the garden, whether used alone in a traditional rose garden or mingled with herbaceous perennials where their long flowering season is very useful. Their vigour makes some varieties ideal for training as short climbers or for use as standard roses.
David Austin's English Roses generally repeat flower extremely well and will provide two or three flushes of flowers during the season. They are ideal as cut flowers as they are less stiff in growth than most Modern Roses and it is possible to create a graceful arrangement with attractively nodding flowers.

Planting and caring for David Austin Roses |
 |
|
Selection:
Make sure that the expected dimensions of the rose suit its position. The actual sizes that each rose will reach will vary, depending on factors such as the soil type, fertility and moisture levels, the amount of sunlight and the way you prune your roses.
Planting position:
Select a site with at least a few hours of sun each day where the roots of the rose will not be in competition with the roots of other plants, especially trees and hedges.
Planting distances:
If you have the space, David Austin English Roses look superb planted in groups of three of one variety. They will then grow together to form one dense shrub, which will provide a more continuous display and make a more definite statement in the border. David Austin suggests planting approximately 45cm apart within the group. Adjacent plants of neighbouring varieties should be planted approximately 75-100cm away. For maximum effect, plant rose hedges fairly close together, again about 45cm apart.
Soil type:
English Roses will grow in a wide range of soils, but whatever type they do appreciate good soil preparation. The addition of a generous quantity of well rotted manure or garden compost before planting will help to ensure strong growth.
Planting:
On arrival, plant as soon as possible, never allowing the roots to dry out. When planted the base of the stems should be about 7.5cm below ground level. If immediate planting is impossible, keep the roses in the bag in a cool but frost free place for no more than two weeks or heel the roses in.
Feeding:
All roses, especially the repeat flowering varieties, greatly appreciate the application of fertiliser at the start of the growing season and again in summer, particularly for repeat-flowering varieties. Excessive nitrogen can make roses more susceptible to both pests and diseases.
Pruning David Austin Roses:
Pruning is very easy. Remove very weak, old and woody, dead and diseased stems. David Austin English Roses and other repeat flowering shrub roses should be cut down by between 1/3 and 2/3 but only thinned a little.
When pruning climbers, the previous year’s flowering shoots should be reduced to 3 or 4 buds or about 15cm. Tie in the strong, new stems, cutting out older ones as necessary.
Summer pruning the more vigorous repeat flowering varieties after each flush of flowers can encourage better repeat flowering and will also limit the height of the rose. To summer prune, simply cut back the flowering stems, leaving two or three buds remaining on this season's new growth.
Dead heading roses: Dead heading is the removal of spent flowers and helps to encourage better repeat flowering and helps to keep the plant looking tidy during the summer. Either just remove the flower head or cut the stem back to the first full leaf.
