Daisies take many different forms and although well known in one sense, a large number of plants are given the label 'Daisy' and it can be confusing which plant is being talked about. Daisies can be categorised as all plants belonging to the Asteraceae family and as well as the Aster genus include over 1600 genera such as Erigeron, Felicia, Helianthus (Sunflower), Osteospermum and Rhodanthe.
Though there are obvious exceptions, many in this family take the form of herbaceous perennial ground covers as they tend to not support the weight of their stems very well as they grow, hence tending to sprawl over the ground.
Daisy flowers are distinctive with an outer ring of petals giving the star appearance from which the family name derives, and a composite centre made up of many small florets of the individual flowers (from which the original family name of Compositae derives).
Daisies are generally easy to grow and many are tolerant of dry conditions.
