If you have something to cover then it’s a climbing rose you want!! Whether you want to feature an archway, obelisk or pergola or you want to cover up an unsightly wall or bare fence we have a wide assortment to choose from. Some more compact roses such as 'Climbing Pinkie' are suitable as Pillar Roses against a column whereas more vigorous varieties such as 'Black Boy' are suitable against walls or as Ramblers in the garden.
Several Roses like ‘Climbing Peace’ and ‘Climbing Iceberg’ have come from fortunate quirks of nature being climbing sports of varieties you may be more familiar with as a bush rose. They share all traits other than their growth habit with the varieties they have come from. Others such as ‘Pierre de Ronsard’ and ‘Westerland’ are varieties bred and selected specifically as climbers.

Pruning Climbing Roses |
 |
|
Climbing Roses require somewhat different pruning techniques to bush roses. What is common to both is the need to remove any dead, diseased or weak branches as a starting point.
There are two part to pruning a Climber - the long canes and the shorter flowering branches. As with other roses, pruning climbers can be undertaken after flowering has finished. The long canes should be selected to give even growth over the area you want it to cover and tied in place to encourage an even spread of growth. Do not tie canes below a horizontal position. The oldest canes should be removed as new canes develop. Canes can be shortened back to maintain the desired size of plant or generally shortened by about a quarter of their length.
Pruning climbing rose canes back excessively will reduce the number of spurs and in turn flower production. The spurs should be pruned back to about 3 or 4 buds, typically about 15cm. More vigorous climbing rose varieties will naturally require more pruning than other varieties to keep them manageable but you may prefer to extend the area they have to grow to avoid excessive pruning.
Pruning Pillar Roses takes the same approach as Pillar Roses are typically smaller Climbing Roses that lend themselves to growing in an upright form against a post, tripod or similar structure. Pruning should aim to create a group of upright canes with spurs along their length to produce a column of flowers with remarkable effect.
