Climbing plants have many different uses in the garden. They are great for hiding fences and sheds, they can be used to add colour to a fence line or smaller climbers can be used in the garden or containers with a simple frame to climb. Climbers are a great way to add a lot of colour without using a lot of space.
Delicate climbing plants like Clematis can be allowed to wander through trees and shrubs where they add splashes of colour in surprising places. Some climbers such as the native Hibertia can be used as a ground cover. Climbers such as Jasmine can fill the garden with perfume when they flower.
Wisteria floribunda
These hardy clockwise-twining Japanese climbers
have pendula racemes of long fragrant white, pink or blue flowers. Wisterias
prefer their tops in the sun but their roots in a cool, moist position. Grows to
8 m high x 8 m wide.
Clematis
Charming climbers profusely bearing flowers in spring or summer.
They have a reputation of being difficult to grow but like any other plant,
given the right site and proper care, they will thrive. Grow them beside a pole,
fence, pergola or trellis or let them climb up a shrub or tree. Clematis require
full sun to grow best, some dappled shade during the heat of the day is
beneficial. They will grow in climates ranging from cool temperate to
tropical.
