Garden Express :: Bulbs - Spring Flowering :: Cuban Lily

Cuban Lily

Cuban Lily (Scilla peruviana) or Hyacinth of Peru is an interesting plant for both its many dark green glossy leaves and large conical head of typically blue flowers, and the possible origins of its name. It originates from the Mediterranean rather than Peru or Cuba as suggested by the names, and it is not a Hyacinth! The name is said to originate from the bulb being transported on the ship SS Peru which traveled the world, including Cuba, in the late 1800's. One version of the story has the SS Peru shipwrecked in Cuba but the accuracy of this is not known.

The Cuban Lily flowers in late spring, or early summer in cooler climates, and the flowers are normally sapphire-blue though a white form also exists.
